We don’t think April showers bring May flowers; we think April showers bring us indoors to shop and find some super cute things to buy for ourselves and as gifts! We’ve staked out some of our favorite local resources, including some very fabulous OTP boutiques, to share some cool items you may want to know about. As always, happy shopping, Atlanta!
Food & Drink
Just because you only have time to reheat a frozen pizza doesn’t mean you can’t add a gourmet twist. Visit Penzeys Spices and pick up their Frozen Pizza Seasoning mix. For a .9-ounce container you’ll spend $4.95 and bring your microwavable cuisine up a few tasty notches. The mix is also great on buttered noodles, marinara sauce and garlic bread.
Henri’s Bakery & Cafe is the only place I have ever heard of, or tried, plantation loaf. It’s a deliciously sweet cake highlighting its two star ingredients: coconut and pecans. The loaves, $6.49 each, make great hostess gifts for anyone who loves a sweet treat after dinner and wants a break from cooking.
We at StyleBlueprint love promoting local brands, great products … and booze. So we hit the trifecta with Thirteenth Colony’s Southern rye whiskey made right here in Americus, GA. Visit Corks & Caps in Sandy Springs and pick up a bottle, $34.99, to serve at your next party with some of our other favorite Atlanta brands, like Doux South Pickles and Beautiful Briny Sea.
If you are going to upset your diet with a chocolately morsel, do it the right way and make a trip to Maison Robert Chocolate in Chamblee. This small tasting/dip bowl filled with more than 12 delectable assorted chocolates costs $19.50 and makes a great gift for those with sweet teeth (or whatever the plural of “sweet tooth” is) in your life.
Yep, you read that right. I said “dog beer.” Before PETA starts blasting us, I should say that this is pretend dog beer — each bottle, $4.95, is water and broth (various flavors) packaged to look like a cold brewskie. So whether Fido likes chicken, beef or pork, he can unwind after a long day of licking himself and harassing the mailman with a cold Bowser Beer from Dog City Bakery. Just make sure any humans in the house reaching into the fridge don’t mistake that much-needed Corona for a Beefy Brown Ale!
For the Kiddos
Kids are cute but their messes are not. Use The Mini Mat from ezpz to keep the toddler in your life happy and your inner neat freak happy, as well. The silicone placemat/plate, available at Baby Love in Grant Park for $19.95, suctions onto the table and prevents your little precious from flinging her food across the dining room floor.
Okay, so your kid won’t get the joke, but we were bent over in hysterics after seeing these awesome sippy cups at Babies ‘R’ Us. These plastic cups with lids resemble those cups often seen jammed into many parents’ mouths … with a twist. Mommy’s morning Starbucks is now Baby Ducks Coffee Rise & Shine Sippy Cup; Daddy’s beer-filled red Solo cup is now the Party Time Sippy Cup; and your go-to condiment comes in sippy form with the Sriracha Cup — each $6.99.
For the Home
The flowers are blooming, and Atlanta is bursting with color. Bring some of those gorgeous hues indoors with a fabulous pillow, $195, from Interior Philosophy. The leaf pattern and chartreuse shade scream spring and will completely update your furniture.
Forget burying your unmentionables in a suitcase only to be momentarily lost among all your other belongings. This lingerie travel bag, $43.95, from Fragile Gifts, is a versatile (and sexy) way of keeping your underwear and accessories in a compartmentalized space with a helpful carrying handle and hanging hook.
Cigar box lamp
I happened upon these super cool cigar box lamps while doing research for my Grant Park article in an unlikely source — Wyzo’s Tobacco & Accessories (guess the accessories include lamps). Owner Leonard Rodda combined his two business ventures of owning a smoke shop and working on custom lamps to create these one-of-a-kind pieces. The lamps, pictured here for $65 (they vary in price and don’t include the shade), are great art pieces that will definitely get any guest remarking about your cool, eclectic taste.
Shoes & Accessories
My feet are so excited to break out of winter’s constrictive footwear and be free in some super sweet sandals and open-toed shoes. Enter these cool TOMS chambray and brown suede clog sandals, $97.95, from Abbadabba’s. Not only are these chic clogs giving us ’70s fabulousness, they are also surprisingly comfortable. These would make a great gift for any gal in need of a hit of nostalgia (hint, hint, I wear a size 8.5).
Two things we love: dessert and shopping. Of course, combining those passions is going to be an automatic win, so thank you Little Tart Bakeshop for carrying such lovely items to wear. We especially love the I Tart ATL trucker hats, $10 each, which will look great atop my hair as I bury my head into a chocolate almond croissant.
Be the contemporary queen you are with these crown earrings, inspired by the art of Jean-Michel Basquiat, part of the High Museum’s new exhibit, “Basquiat: The Unknown Notebooks.” The crown was his signature motif, and Basquiat used the image to top the heads of the heroes he painted. The earrings cost $30 ($27 for museum members) from the High Shop and will definitely get your friends and art enthusiasts talking.
Now that you’ve cleaned your house for spring, it’s time to restock the purse section of your closet with this fabulous leather tote bag by Benenate Collection. Atlanta resident Katina Benenate creates leather luxury goods that have a modern twist, perfect for a lady who wants amazing craftsmanship without breaking the bank. The Lucille, pictured here in brown crocodile and tan trim, is $495 and features a cool cutout handle. You can order this bag and other accessories on the site or check out Bill Hallman.
If you know of a great item every Atlanta shopper should be aware of or a really cool store that is carrying some out-of-this-world merchandise, please let the StyleBlueprint crew know — email [email protected]. And may your wallets be full and your shopping shoes comfy as you set out to do some major retail therapy this month!
