Long before the loyal Beyhive fiercely defended their queen at every turn, there were the original members of the hive — honeybees may not love “Lemonade,” but they’re “Crazy in Love” with their queen. Unlike Beyoncé’s fan base, these bees stay off Twitter and focus on one sweet goal: honey. In fact, honeybees have their own loyal following in the form of Savannah Bee Company.

Savannah Bee Company organically developed when CEO/founder Ted Dennard discovered a love of beekeeping as a young boy. After years spent learning about honeybees, their colonies and their importance in our environment, Ted eventually founded the company years later in 2002. Headquartered on Wilmington Island in Savannah, Georgia, Savannah Bee Company not only focuses on their world-class, delicious honey, but also on amazing beauty products derived from hive-based ingredients, including beeswax, royal jelly and, of course, that amber panacea that is honey.

“Tupelo honey is the gold standard by which all other honey varieties are measured,” says Ted. “For two weeks every spring, white (Ogeche) tupelo trees in the southeastern swamps bloom with fine, sunburst-shaped flowers that glisten with nectar. Savannah Bee Company’s tupelo honey has buttery undertones and a mellow, clean-finishing sweetness. It’s like a thick, slow-moving river of liquid sunshine.”

The company has grown to add additional shops throughout the Southeast and in fact, just opened their first retail store outside the region in Connecticut. Atlanta's store is scheduled to open July 28, 2017 (as of press time). Image: Kate Dowdle

Besides Savannah Bee Company's delicious honey, don't overlook the beauty and taste of their raw honeycomb. According to SBC, there are lots of good reasons to eat honeycomb besides the taste -- it can help treat allergies and alleviate asthma. Image: Savannah Bee Company

That liquid sunshine is coming to an additional location, when the company opens its newest retail location at Westside Provisions District of Atlanta later this month, with another new location coming to Gatlinburg, TN, soon as well. Customers and bee enthusiasts alike can stop by to take a look at all of their deliciously fabulous products, including artisanal honeys (besides tupelo, varieties include wildflower, acadia, orange blossom and sourwood) as well as whipped honey and honeycomb (we are now officially obsessed with the medicinal properties of this edible byproduct). Not sure which honey you’d like most? Each charming location features daily honey tastings and a mead bar for honey-wine tastings.

Besides sharing the honeybee-inspired gifts and tasty treats they create, Savannah Bee Company is dedicated to their mission of educating people about bees and their importance to our environment. Ted and his company helped found The Bee Cause Project in 2013, an organization that installs observation hives inside schools as well as traditional hives in gardens to teach, inspire and engage young people about the importance of honeybees and reconnect kids and adults with the natural world.

“What happens to the bees will happen to us; we rise or fall with the bees,” says Ted. “Let’s work to be more symbiotic in the way we live in the world. Let’s work together to live a life that approaches that of the noble honeybee — a life where we do no harmful actions, only mutually beneficial ones. Through The Bee Cause Project we can, together, embark on a path full of wonder that leaves us and the world a better educated, more beautiful place. What bees sustained for 100 million years, let us not destroy in 100 years.”

After talking with someone as passionate as Ted, you realize honey is so much more than just a condiment or natural sweetener — it’s the tireless result of hard-working bees and their crucial connection with the natural world.

Savannah Bee Company will get you thinking outside the box tea cup when it comes to the miraculous benefits of honey. Whether reaping the benefits from the outside, like SBC beauty products Beeswax Hand Cream and Royal Jelly Body Butter, or the inside, like their scrumptious Lavender Honey or Whipped Honey Chocolate, your body, the environment and honeybees over the world will thank you.
