Whether flying short distances or really long distances I generally wear the same outfit. I usually try and dress in neutral staples that I know I will be able to incorporate later in the trip. And, I avoid too many lighter colors as I am known to spill drinks and food all over myself! Layers are definitely the key and I always have something long-sleeved to wear. It is usually an over-sized wrap with a scarf (who wants to use airline blankets??).
Here are some basics for flying:
A dark colored, stretchy pant.
The J Crew Pixie Pant is the main staple of my airport outfit. I first bought the pants for a trip to Turkey three years ago. I’m now on my second pair and I shutter the day J Crew stops selling them!
The pant is really similar to leggings as they have a nice stretch and the waistband isn’t constricting (even with the back zipper). But, I think the Pixie pant looks a little more put together than leggings. And, I think they hold up better between washings.
An Oversized Wrap
The key with your oversized wrap or top layer is for it to be comfy enough to curl up in but not too heavy to carry around. My favorite wrap is from Lululemon. I can’t find the exact one but this one from Elieen Fisher looks pretty similar.
I really like this one from Anthropologie.
And, this one from Nordstrom is only $29 during their preseason sale!
To round out my outfit I always wear flats (sometimes dressy sandals, but never flip flops) and I always carry a scarf, as even if I don’t end up wrapping it around my neck, scarves make for the perfect pillow.
Big Carry On
I usually use a large purse as my carry on; it’s my catch all for my wallet, magazines, and a book.
Inside my big bag I always have smaller zippered pouches for important documents, jewelry, medication, electronic chargers and snacks. I keep most of these bags packed once I get home (except the jewelry and medication) so all I have to do before a trip is throw them in my big bag.
For small bags, I love these Tili bags, pictured above, that we have posted about before. They are available online and also at Woo and come in large and small sizes.
I also usually carry a baggu bag with me to use once we get to our location.
Since there is nothing fun about flying anymore (except getting to your destination) I like that my go-to outfit keeps me prepared and ready for whatever is thrown our way!
