I think one of the most common questions asked of pregnant women is “what are you craving?” The expected answer is always a crazy concoction, like ice cream and pickles. Now that I am nearing the end of my pregnancy, it has been fun to think back on all of the foods that I have craved (and the foods that I haven’t been able to stand to look at the past 8 months). My normal salty/savory palate has done a complete 180 degrees, and usually all I want is something sweet. During my good moments, I crave fruit. Other times, it’s all about doughnuts.
Luckily, (or maybe unluckily?) I live about 10 minutes away from one of the best doughnut shops in all of Atlanta, Sublime Doughnuts. Sublime Doughnuts, which is owned by local Atlantan Kamal Grant who studied baking at the Culinary Institue of American and the American Institute of Baking, is known for their fresh doughnuts and creative toppings.
Usually there is no need to combine the doughnuts with pickles, because the inventive flavors of the doughnuts satisfy my craving by themselves. Although–true confessions, here– I have paired an afternoon doughnut with a bowl of yogurt. You know, to make it “healthy” and add some protein.
This is what usually happens. I just leave the doughnuts sitting out after breakfast. And then I eventually pull out a knife, and then every time I walk by another little bite disappears.
After polling our Facebook fans for favorite local doughnut shops, the true winners in the eyes of the Atlanta doughnut lovers are Sublime Doughnuts, Revolution Doughnuts, and the Krispy Kreme on Ponce de Leon. Because my blood sugar can only take so much doughnut tasting, I asked intrepid Decatur resident and StyleBlueprint friend, Amy Lesesne to pick out a few of her favorite doughnuts from Revolution Doughnuts.
Like Sublime Doughnuts, Revolution Doughnuts likes to be creative with their flavor pairings. They describe their shop as a “mom and pop” place where everything is made from scratch using real food ingredients. I think this bacon and salted caramel doughnut (pictured below) would satisfy both my sweet and salty cravings!
Are you craving a doughnut now?
