I have always had a soft spot for casual, southwestern-inspired clothing. Boots, turquoise, suede, fringe, jeans … I’m in. It’s that whole Ralph Lauren thing. I am a happy gal that there are so many options to choose from this season, but tread carefully.
The problem with these coats is that many people decide to go all out in the whole “desert” theme when wearing them. Don’t. It’s not tricky to wear a blanket coat, you just need to hold back on other western-themed accessories. So, save the cowboy boots for another day and consider flats, suede sandals or non-cowboy boots. No cowboy hats either, and swap your fringe bag for one more refined. And turquoise? Well, I don’t think you can ever go wrong there … but maybe avoid the classic concho belt and go for a fabulous pair of earrings instead.
Here are three outfits that show you how to embrace the blanket coat and then several options for jackets at the end as well. Remember to shop your local stores as many have great options on the showroom floor so you can see if poncho, draped or tailored is the way you want to go.
The following looks do make me oh-so-very happy for fall!

SB Note: I hate when something sells out after pulling together these collages. So, a heads up on two items in Outfit #3 — the last jacket in the list is not available until 11/23/14 at Anthropologie. There still may be some in your local stores, so check there. Also, the necklace is one I found on sale from Tory Burch, but it is now sold out. I’ve listed a new one below, not on sale, but pretty fabulous.
I can’t help it. Three more blanket coats with lots of color. Just add your jeans, denim skirt or leggings with boots. Fabulous!
