Steve McKenzie has shared his art and his love of entertaining with Atlanta for years now, but it wasn’t until he and his wife, Jill, flung open the doors to their new shop that they truly welcomed us home. Nestled into a corner on the Westside — and right down the street from their previous location — the new Steve McKenzie’s shop is full of color, beautiful accessories and jewelry, comfortable upholstery and everything you need for entertaining.
The focal point of the shop is its colorful fabric line. The patterns are digitized from brushstrokes in Steve’s original art and are then printed in colorful hues on heavy fabric perfect for upholstery and drapes.
One reason for the move from their old location into their new space was to garner more room for everyday entertaining pieces. Both Steve and Jill are drawn to creating a comfortable and colorful entertaining environment. For them, life and entertaining is about that Southern sensibility of mixing the old and the new, using colorful earthenware and Grandmother’s silver, and always using cloth napkins.
Their upholstery line is also an important part of the brand new shop. The furniture line was created on several basic tenets: make it comfortable (Jill is very mindful of seat depths, as she doesn’t like her feet dangling off sofas), make it quality (the sofas and chairs are handcrafted in North Carolina by skilled artisans) and make it beautiful (they want the pieces to blend seamlessly into the room, but also be pleasing to the eye).
Steve and Jill have sought out Southern jewelry designers in order to offer a large selection of jewelry at varying price points. One highlight in particular is jeweler Grandmother’s Buttons, which repurposes antique buttons into gorgeous items. Many of the pieces serve double duty: a necklace can also be wrapped around the wrist as a bracelet.
One of the things that is so “Steve McKenzie” is the thought behind each product. For their line of bags created from their own fabrics, Steve and Jill thought about the placement of each pocket and how wide the bag would carry so wearers aren’t constantly bumping into people. They have a bag for every use, too. Work bags and satchels for men, bags with multiple pockets perfect for diaper bags and everyday purses, and lightweight bags for shopping.
Keep in mind, though, that Steve McKenzie’s is not just an entertaining and design shop. The space also functions as an art gallery and meeting space for their design business.
In the back room, they have set up a warm and cozy library for client meetings. In addition to the store, Steve and Jill also work with clients to create their dream homes.
We are so excited to see Steve McKenzie’s grow and expand its brand. With such thoughtful owners and creators, we love seeing their star continue to rise!
