A good taco seems to please everyone. From child to adult, a plate of tacos makes an easy lunch or dinner for all. And, with gourmet taco spots popping up in every neighborhood, there are many place to choose from. Here are our picks for great tacos from around town:
Taqueria del Sol
If you were to judge a taco by the length of the order line, then Taqueria del Sol might be the winner. Often, the line stretches into the parking lot, even before it opens. But, it is worth it. The freshness of the ingredients shine and the spice is spot on. And, the service is quick. So even if the line is long, you are quickly in and out.
Taqueria’s food is truly a Southern/Mexican fusion. Collard greens are served as a side and there are brisket and fried chicken tacos, too. I love to order either the fried chicken or the fish tacos. And often times I also choose the Taco of the Day, which can sometimes be an inventive creation. A cheeseburger taco or the sloppy joe taco sounds a bit off, but I have had both, and would order them again in a heartbeat. As for sides, I love the charros beans and the side salad is served with a zesty, oil and vinegar dressing that is a favorite.
Order your margarita on the rocks, we make sure to add salt, by the glass or a pitcher. There is a good selection of domestic and Mexican beers, always served cold. If you are with just a couple of people you can bypass the line and pull up a seat at the bar. Taqueria is located on the Westside, Decatur, Cheshire Bridge, and Athens. www.taqueriadelsol.com
Sitting on the patio of Verde, margarita in hand, on a warm spring evening is one of my happy places. Both Verde locations have patios, but the Westside location, on Collier Road, is a bit bigger with more seating. Verde is a full service restaurant, which makes going with kids or a large group a bit easier.
On the menu, there are quite a few tacos to choose from, including a few vegetarian tacos featuring tofu. We love the Grilled Fish, the Buffalo Tofu, and the Fried Calamari. The cheese dip is one of our favorites in town so make sure to order it.
We love that Verde prides itself on being a local, neighborhood restaurant so be prepared to be recognized after stopping by a time or two.Verde has locations on the Westside and Brookhaven. verdetacos.com
Tacos and Tequilas
Out of all of the places on our list, the atmosphere of Tacos and Tequilas is the most like a traditional Americanized Mexican restaurant. And, it has gained quite the following of people who love their margarita, tacos, and other fare.
We love the traditional Tacos de Asada and the Tacos de Brisket. And while we haven’t tried it yet, we have heard great things about the Skinny Tacos, which is either a choice of marinated chicken breast or fish tacos wrapped in romaine lettuce leaves instead of tortillas. It is always nice to have a healthy option at a Mexican restaurant, especially when there is chips, salsa, and cheese dip to eat!
And at the bar, Tacos and Tequilas has a large selection of margaritas and daiquiris. The bar area has TVs and the noise level can sometimes be high, but that also makes it an easy place to bring kids! Tacos and Tequilas is located on Roswell Road in Buckhead, and it is opening soon in Virginia-Highlands. www.tandtatlanta.com
Not a restaurant, Tex’s Tacos is food truck, but we had to include it because it is one of our favorites in town. Known as the “Antonio Banderas” of food trucks, Tex’s Tacos serves up a short, but delicious menu of tacos and quesadillas in their fully outfitted truck.
We crave their Carne Asada Taco, and their Veggie Taco is one of our favorites in town. And, you just have to order their Lime Fries. They are so incredibly crispy with the perfect amount of zest from the lime. Unfortunately, no margaritas or beer because it is a food truck, but they do have Mexican Coke and Fanta, which are quite delicious, as well.
The Tex’s Taco’s truck is on a bit of a break right now as they change ownership. Since they are being acquired by Happy Belly Curbside Truck, another Atlanta favorite, we know the food will be just as delicious when they are back on the streets in April. You are sure to catch them at many spring and summer events and festivals around town and they also make a great option for catering because they bring their truck to you
We hope we have made you hungry for some tacos! If we missed your favorite spot, let us know on our Facebook page!
