As I think about five summer 2015 trends, I like to look ahead to some fall trends and make sure that much of what I buy now can make the easy transition into the next season. Especially that tricky month of September, when it’s hot but we all want to “look” fall. It’s all about more bang for your buck, right? These are the styles I’ve got my eye on to wear now and as the leaves change:
Flare Jeans
It’s the ’70s thing and also because the fashion gods don’t like us to get too comfy in one style of pants, as then we won’t buy anything, right? So skinnies are starting to meet their match. You can still wear your skinnies, but if you want to be fashion-forward in a way that you will be very mainstream soon, buy some flare jeans. If you feel too old for big flares, just start to embrace the boot cut look again.
SB Tip: With your flares, show your feet, as shown in both examples below. When the flares hit the ground without any shoe or foot showing, it creates what I like to call the elephant leg. And while your chunky heels will look great with this style of jean, go more modern with your top so that you don’t look like a ’70s costume.
The Chunky Heel
Again, it’s the ’70s vibe that just keeps getting stronger and stronger, and the chunky heel is here to stay, at least for a while. Embrace a style that you can get a lot of use from over many seasons. Forgo the platform for a less disco and more mainstream ’70s look.
SB Tip: Chunky heels can be found on low, mid and high heels right now. If you don’t like a high heel, now is your time to indulge in a mid-heel!
A few examples to give you a better idea of how shoes you can buy RIGHT NOW will take you into fall (get out and shop your local boutiques, as they can give you great advice on shoes that can make the leap into fall):
Longer Vest
Longer blazers are in for fall, and vests are in for summer. So marry the two and purchase a longer vest to wear now and into the cooler months as well.
SB Tip: For summer, wear the vest with a sleeveless top. It’s more sleek than over a short sleeve.
Brown Leather Belt
Just a good, plain, brown leather belt. You can wear it with your jeans, make a dress a bit more casual, wrap it over a blazer/cardigan if you work in an air-conditioned office or just tighten up a fuller blouse. But belts are in, and they are going to stay in.
SB Tip: Remember when finding a plain old belt was seriously way too hard? That was about two or three years ago. Not long. If you are a belt gal, you may want to take advantage of all the possibilities available at your local boutiques right now. They can also show you how to knot them, instead of just buckling them, which is a big trend.
White Pieces
Buy up your whites, as you’ll be wearing them come fall, as well! Tees, jeans, skirts, jackets … the whole “you really can wear white after Labor Day” thing is finally getting traction.
SB Tip: You won’t want to wear linen or summer-y fabrics into fall, but cotton shirts, jeans, blazers and white professional dress are all items that you can pull from as the temperature drops. If you want the biggest bang for your buck, invest in white pieces like these.
To prove the point, since we all know all-white outfits work for summer, here are all-white outfits for fall:
