January rushes in with a list of goals and resolutions. Today, our FINDS center around some popular resolutions. You can do it!
Little changes add up. This can be with exercise, eating and yes, changes in products that really are toxic. Here are a couple products to consider on your quest to “go green.”
Organic Laundry Detergent
This locally-based company is a favorite when it comes to their eco-friendly based laundry products. Easy on your clothes and a way to reduce dry cleaning costs, Roux Maison products come in lots of scents–Ambrosia, Sweet Tea or fragrance free. Available in Nashville at AshBlue, Two Old Hippies and Jamie. For a full listing of retailers, please see: www.rouxmaison.com
Have you resolved to spend quality time with loved ones this year? Here are a couple ways to ensure these are fun times:
Time spent with family rejuvenates those relationships. How about we bring back Family Night with some board games?
Tackling puzzles is so much fun and a great way to spend time with a loved one or to put your noggin through some serious spacial reasoning. This Nashville puzzle collection is from the locally-based True South Puzzle Company, featuring Spirit of Nashville art. With many cold days ahead, a puzzle, some hot chocolate and a warm fire add up to a perfect afternoon. Pick one up for yourself at The Beveled Edge: www.thebevel.com
Country Music Hall of Fame
Have you discovered just how fun the Country Music Hall of Fame is? If not, make it a resolution to do this. Events, exhibits and classes are suited for adults, kids, individuals and families alike. Take a moment and look through what is being offered just for January and we bet you will be planning a trip to this Nashville treasure. countrymusichalloffame.org/calendar
PICK UP AN OLD HOBBY (OR A NEW HOBBY!)
Need a little new zing in your life? Hobbies keep you interesting and your mind fresh!
Do you play guitar, mandolin, banjo, fiddle, bass or dobro but you haven’t picked it up in a while? Or, perhaps you play but don’t know how to branch out and learn to jam. The Station Inn has the perfect class for you! Sunday nights from 4-6:30 is a jam class and you will be jamming during the first class! It’s fun. Leave your comfort zone and discover how much fun this is. 8 sessions are just $195 and each is taught by Jeff Burke. stationinn.com/index01/jam-class
It’s one thing to say “I support local” and another to go out and put your money where your mouth is. Make a point to shop locally-owned businesses in 2014. I know, we can’t all buy local 100% of the time–what about Whole Foods?! Target? J. Crew? We know. But really, most of us can do a little better. Here are just a couple local brands, which are part of a huge list, that you purchase locally and are also manufactured locally:
Otis James — he makes lady ties also!
You may have missed the news a few months ago that Otis James now has a collection of “Lady Ties.” They are fabulous. He is also selling scarves, caps, bowties, neckties, hankies and ascots. If you have not had the pleasure of visiting his Marathon Village shop, which happens to be where he hand makes each piece, as well, pledge to do so in 2014. This “Lady Tie” is $75. shop.otisjames.com
Southern Firefly Candles
Made locally but sold throughout the country, Southern Firefly Candles are each hand poured and made from all natural soy wax with double cotton wicks. There are no dyes or additives. We especially enjoy a product that can be repurposed and that is the case here: once your candle has burned through, use the glass container as a cocktail or juice glass! There are several collections available but this “destination” collection has recently caught our eye. Available locally at The Perfect Pair, Two Old Hippies, You’re Invited, Silver Steer and Co and many more. www.southernfirefly.com
TAKE BETTER CARE OF YOUR SKIN
Upgrade your skincare routine with a Clarisonic cleansing system. The sonic skin cleansing brushes–which move over 300 times per second–exfoliate and cleanse for smoother, healthier skin. Your Vitamin C will have 61% greater absorption when used after cleansing with this device. In fact, it cleanses 600% better than hand washing alone! The Clarisonic Pro, with 4 speeds is available for $225 at Woo Skincare + Cosmetics, Trace Skin Care and The Cosmetic Market.
Find a tinted moisturizer with SPF and extra benefits in it and commit to using it, everyday. A new-found favorite is from Dr. Dennis Gross as it is light and not at all cakey. The added benefits include “powerful antioxidants vitamins C and E to prevent collagen breakdown, avobenzone and octinoxate to keep skin protected from sun damage, and hyaluronic acid to keep skin moisturized and refreshed.” $36. Available at Woo Skincare + Cosmetics: wooskincareandcosmetics.com.
Many of us find ourselves exhausted by the end of the day and we brush our teeth, head to bed and then think, “Arg. I didn’t wash my face.” If this is you, vow to take your makeup off every night. Here is a an easy solution: Keep some cleansing wipes (we like these by Neutrogena) on your nightstand and then next time you are under the covers with your makeup on, simply reach over, grab a wipe, and clean your face. $6.99 at local drugstores.
GET MORE SLEEP
Americans, in general, do not get enough sleep. Make a resolution to get to bed earlier and discover how the simple solution of more sleep can positively impact your health. Sometimes getting to sleep is hard, but quality sheets and comfy PJ’s do help!
New Sheets and Bedding
Comfortable sheets will make you sleep better and it may be time to upgrade. We’re big believers in having the best sheets you can within your budget and having just a couple sets (instead of lots of sets of sub-par sheets). With January the month for White Sales, look around and find some comfy Egyptian Cotton or well-made flannel sheets. Your rested self will thank you. In Nashville, you can find a fabulous selection of sheets and bedding, as well as an educated staff on finding the perfect bedding and linens for your needs, at Bella Linea. Bargain shopping (we know, no one has money in January!) for sheets is best in Nashville at Tuesday Morning, TJ MAXX and PD’s.
A couple people found these PJ bottoms under the tree and are talking about how great they are. Cozy and flannel, but still girly–in a good way. Found at Anthropologie for $49.50. Pair with tank and you are set. www.anthropologie.com
We dedicated an entire post to sleeping better in October of 2011. If this is your resolution, here are some tips: styleblueprint.com
We got a sneak peek of this book and loved everything about it! Nutritionist, Carolyn O’Neil takes a fresh approach on “healthy cookbooks” with her delicious recipes that use real ingredients (nothing funny or hard to find). We also love her snappy graphics, bright photos, and easy to follow instructions that make it nothing like your mother’s diet cookbooks! www.carolynoneil.com/the-dish-book
DON’T TEXT AND DRIVE
Just a reminder that this makes a great resolution that just may save your life.
GET IN SHAPE
We’ll dive into this category a bit later in the month, but for now, here are a couple things you can by to jumpstart your new year!
Hoka One One Running Shoes
These shoes may look crazy, but everyone is raving about their comfort and performance. Consider this the next step in the evolution of the running shoe that allows your foot a more natural movement (previous options were the “barefoot” and “free” type running shoes). “While much of the early focus of this new era of shoe design has been around minimalism and less cushioning, Hoka One One has pursued innovation in an entirely different direction. Our shoes are engineered for maximum cushioning, comfort, protection and energy return, while still offering lightweight, nimble performance and uninhibited movement. (The running shoes are 15 percent lighter than most traditionally-cushioned running shoes on the market.)”–Hoka One One website. Pretty impressive. The folks at Fleet Feet Green Hills turned us onto these and they always give great advice. $130-$170 www.fleetfeetsports.com
Sanctuary Yoga DVD
Sanctuary has just released their first DVD and it’s well worth every penny of $19.99. “Vinyasa Flow Yoga for Strength, Stability & Grace. The DVD features Daphne Larkin’s signature flows and original music by Nashville’s own Thomas Orr Anderson. With nearly 3 hours of flows to choose from, you can learn the foundations of vinyasa flow yoga and begin to grow your practice at your own pace. The sequences are designed to complement each other and introduce poses in stages.” Many of us have taken classes from Daphne for years; she is an thoughtful and gracious yoga instructor. This DVD makes a wonderful addition to your meditation and/or workout routine. Purchase at Sanctuary or online: www.sanctuaryforyoga.com
BECOME MORE CIVICALLY INVOLVED
Educate yourself on our country’s political issues with this fabulous app. iCitizen is your place to learn. “iCitizen allows you to efficiently follow and speak out about issues that mean the most to you. You will know more about your elected representatives and have a simple way to share your views — all from the palm of your hand. Download the free app now. Make your voice count.” Find out more, and download the FREE app: www.icitizen.com.
Lives are busy. Things get moved around. It’s hard to commit to a standing volunteer date. We get it. It’s super easy to volunteer on a date that you have open by using the Hands On Nashville (HON) Volunteer Opportunity Calendar. Find something that fits your interests and time frame and sign up! It’s that easy. Make a pledge in 2014 to give back each and every month. Here is a screenshot of the HON calendar for this week. To see the interactive calendar, please see: www.hon.org.
ORGANIZE YOUR CLOSET
Tired of your boots falling over? Picked up these boot stand “Sticks.” The sticks clip you boots together and upright so they are off the floor of your closet. Our ATL SB gals love them and we’re anxious to try them out. $5.99 www.containerstore.com
Women’s Fund High-End Fashion Consignment Sale
Our favorite consignment sale of the year is coming and we couldn’t think of a better reason to empty out our closets! We promise, you will feel SO MUCH BETTER with less in your wardrobe and dollars in your pocket! We have been putting aside our own items for this sale and we urge you to do the same. Not only are you supporting a fabulous organization (The Women’s Fund), you are supporting your own sanity, as a cleaned out closet is a huge gift to yourself!
Items should be current, in great shape and higher-end. That fabulous top you spent too much on but you never, ever wear? That ball gown you wore once and never will again? Those Jimmy Choo shoes you bought on vacation but have never really fit? That Coach bag that never was really “you.” Even that J. Crew cashmere sweater that just isn’t your color … ditch them all and allow them to be loved by someone who will wear them with delight while raising funds for The Women’s Fund!
To get a consignor number, please see: www.cfmt.org
Cheers to 2014!
