Shop Local for Fitness Wardrobe Updates

Today, writer and running enthusiast Anna Grimes shares some great information about where to shop in Nashville to update your fitness wardrobe:

By now the bloom is off the rose of that New Year’s resolution to get fit and work out more. So what better time than now to freshen up your workout wardrobe for added motivation? But stop. Tax season is around the corner, or maybe this is the time to be more budget conscious.

Updating a fitness wardrobe can be done affordably, attractively and, as an added bonus, locally. I’ve explored three local stores to find just the right pieces to keep you moving: Nashville Running Company in East Nashville; Team Nashville on West End Avenue and The Athlete’s House, smack dab in the middle of the Belmont University campus.

All three store owners agreed that the basics of a fitness wardrobe in Nashville comes down to seven pieces: sports bra, shoes and socks, tights, shorts, a fitted tee and a looser, long sleeve tee.

Nashville Running Company

Owner Lee Wilson is a former competitive runner from Oregon who opened Nashville Running Company in the Five Points area in 2011 with a simple goal: to get people out there. From Crossfit to Pilates, yoga to marathon training, he wants to get you moving and get outside.

Fit-wise, Wilson maintains, you need to spend some time getting the right sports bra and the right pair of shoes. There’s always a trained sports bra fitter on hand at Nashville Running, so ask for their help.

Nashville Running is the unofficial home of the East Nasty running club, and Lee works hard to keep them happy. And as every serious runner knows, compression gear is worth its weight in gold. But Lee takes it a step further by carrying 110% Compression, a line of compression capris, sleeves and tights that include pockets to insert ice packets after you run. Trainers and physicians are always telling us to ice our sore muscles for faster recovery, but who wants to shudder through an ice bath when you can let 110% Compression do it for you? I can’t wait to try these out.

Team Nashville

Founded in 1977, Terry and Robert moved to their current site in 2008 and doubled their space. They have a depth of inventory to keep the most finicky customer happy.

If the shoe fits, wear it. But that’s easier said than done. Despite the recent flurry of attention focused on the minimalist running shoe, most of us need a bit of support and cushioning to soldier on through our workouts. Terry Coker and Robert Eslick, owners of Team Nashville, will help you find the best fitting shoe for the type of exercise you enjoy.

Next on the list is socks, and as with the sports bra, you want your socks to breathe and prevent chafing and blisters. Keep the seams down to a minimum and the thread count high and you’re good to go. At all three stores, Swiftwick socks scored the best. Swiftwick, a Tennessee-based manufacturer, hasn’t been around long but has built a loyal fan base that shows no signs of abating.

The Athlete’s House

Now you’re down to the externals–tights and shorts, tees–to complete your wardrobe. David Graefflin and his capable staff at The Athlete’s House are uber-easy to work with and super efficient in helping you find what you need. According to David, whatever you do, don’t forget “cotton is rotten.” That is, make sure your gear is made of wicking material that will keep moisture away from the skin. Cotton fabrics will just slow you down.

Best sellers in the tights and shorts categories are practically anything by Nike. For yogis, a pair of loose fitting tights can take you through the toughest Bikram workout. For those running the Music City Half next month, Athlete’s House stocks capris, shorts and skorts galore.

Now that you’ve stocked up on your fitness basics, do what Nashville Running’s Lee Wilson says and “get out there!”

Anna Grimes has been running on a budget since 2004, when she completed her first half marathon. Since then, she’s racked up 9 marathons and several halfs.

Currently sidelined with a hip injury, she’s looking forward to running the Charleston, SC marathon next year, if only for the free shrimp and grits at the end!
