Stylist Sukey Johnson shares some fashion advice to help us make the jump from full-on summer to fall.
Fall is upon us. But how should we dress when the weather still feels like July? Common questions I’m asked this time of year are: Can I still wear white pants, open-toed shoes or sleeveless tops? Yes, yes, and yes! We face fashion challenges when we are still perspiring and longing for fall’s cooler weather and colors, but I have some tips to help you transition stylishly through these hot weeks on into the crisp autumn days that are just around the corner.
Don’t retire your white jeans too soon. They are perfect paired with tops and shoes in fall’s earth tones, like tan, gold and ivory. They’re also versatile items to dress up or down. For cooler evenings, add a cami under your top, or wear a scarf or pashmina.
A denim jacket is a simple and classic piece that can help complete a wide variety of looks. I love these wheat colored twill pants (shown below). They look great with the natural stitching in the jacket. The polished ballet flats and scarf take this outfit up a notch to business casual.
Another possibility for the denim jacket? Wear over everyone’s favorite, the little black dress, of course. Again, with different accessories, this look can go a few different ways and places. The Tom’s red wedge adds a nice pop of color and makes this look causal; the black patent sling amps it up a bit for work.
You can find denim jackets at many different price points, but the best bargain I’ve found is the Target version for $25, with the Gap, at $50, following as a close second. Do I need to tell you not to wear denim on denim? (It’s good to be reminded.) And don’t wear your denim jacket with colored jeans either.

The Trench Coat
Lastly, I love encouraging clients to go for it and get a great trench and a pair of wellies. Once you decide on the perfect trench, you will wear it every chance you get and begin planning on your second one for the spring! (Same goes for the boots.) Don’t impulse buy, though. Try on different styles and colors to find the best fit. There is a surplus of them certain times of the year (usually fall and spring), so if you miss your chance the first time, get ready for the next! I promise it makes getting ready for work on a rainy day way more fun.

Roald Dahl says, “If you have good thoughts, they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely!” I think there is some truth to that!
Thanks so much, Sukey!
