Since opening its doors in 1967, Brentwood Jewelry & Gifts has held fast to its claim as one of the most sought-after jewelers in Middle Tennessee. Owned and operated by the Emamlie family for three generations, Brentwood Jewelry is committed to providing exceptional customer service–and it shows. Simply walk through the doors and you’ll be immediately greeted like a long-lost friend.
“Working with people is my favorite part about what I do,” says store owner and founder Salem Emamlie. “I get to help people through their most important life ventures, whether that’s picking out the perfect engagement ring or finding the perfect anniversary gift.”
A proud veteran and a true people person: That’s the best way to describe Salem. Originally from the island of Trinidad, Salem moved to the United States as a young boy to work for his uncle making handmade jewelry in New York. After being drafted into the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, Salem was stationed at Fort Campbell, KY, for some time. When he left the army, he stayed in Middle Tennessee and worked for a number of jewelry stores. Ultimately, because of his passion for making handcrafted jewelry, Salem decided to open a showroom where his designs could be displayed and sold. Just like that, Brentwood Jewelry opened its doors in 1967, and the rest is history.
Today, Salem runs Brentwood Jewelry—still in its same location on Church Street just off Franklin Road in Brentwood—along with his son, Brandon Emamlie. The store carries a wide selection of engagement rings, watches, diamonds, pearls, jewelry and gifts for every budget, from moderately priced earrings to $500,000 bracelets.
What makes Brentwood Jewelry so special is that it is decidedly old-fashioned. While some jewelers are apt to spend exorbitant amounts of money on marketing campaigns, you’d be hard-pressed to find a single advertisement for Brentwood Jewelry. That’s because nearly 90 percent of new business is referred via word-of-mouth, says Brandon.
“Entire families have been coming here since the store opened,” Brandon says. “Our customers become like family to us.”
Here’s something you might not know about Brentwood Jewelry: They’re the largest custom design shop in the mid-South. The store has a certified gemologist on-site, as well as five jewelry makers, so a large percentage of the store’s inventory is made in-house. In other words, if you’re looking for a true one-of-a-kind engagement ring, Brentwood Jewelry is the place to go. No matter what your heart desires, they will design precisely what you’re looking for. During our visit, Salem showed us the back room, where a group of jewelry makers were hard at work.
“Our warranty is our word,” he says. “If something falls apart, we will take care of it, no questions asked.”
According to Salem, the store’s Design Your Own Engagement Ring service has been tremendously popular. Thanks to the rise of Pinterest and countless wedding websites, it’s hardly a secret that the modern bride has become more picky than ever. Catering to the most discriminating of tastes, Brentwood Jewelry allows you to craft the perfect ring based on a broad selection of settings, stones and styles. Also, in addition to custom ring and jewelry designs, the store offers appraisals, jewelry and watch repair, and custom engravings.
But it’s the dedicated staff that makes shopping at Brentwood Jewelry & Gifts a truly unique experience. After glancing through the various online reviews of Brentwood Jewelry, one thing quickly becomes clear: No customer leaves unsatisfied. There was one particularly poignant review that stood out in our mind. One out-of-town customer tells of visiting Brentwood Jewelry a year ago to have a family pendant put on a cheap set of pearls for her daughter’s wedding. While visiting the store, the customer told one of the staff members that she wanted to wear pearls to her daughter’s wedding, but couldn’t afford to buy a new set.
She writes: “I was completely stunned when he went to the cabinet and asked me to pick a pair to borrow, saying, ‘It’s your daughter’s wedding. You need a set of pearls, just bring them back.’ I argued with him for a while saying, ‘You don’t even know me,’ to which he replied, ‘You don’t even know me, and yet you left your grandmother’s pendant with me.’ Finally I gave up and left the store with a double set strand of pearls to wear at the wedding. I couldn’t believe it.”
