What to Wear: One Black Dress…

Yes, the LBD or Little Black Dress. We all know it has great potential, but we usually just add a pair of heels, some earrings and out the door we go.

During the season of holiday parties here is an example of one dress that you can dress up and dress down.

The most important rule of all: find a dress that is good for your body type. If you must have a v-neck or an a-line, find the one that works best and buy it. It will be your anchor piece for years to come!

Today, one dress, one pair of earrings and one handbag work with all three outfits (simplify!):

Dress, www.jmclaughlin.com, $195. This dress has ruching on the side and 3/4 sleeves. The neckline is right between a scoop and a boat neck and it falls close to the knee. In other words, this dress will flatter many. $195

Each outfit is also paired with this pair of earrings by Temple St. Clair. AshBlue is hosting a trunk sale November 30 – December 1, 2012.

And, this Elaine Turner clutch is the perfect go-with-everything accessory this holiday season:

Bella Velvet Clutch, Elaine Turner, $225.

So, let’s make this work for a neighborhood open house, an after work party and dressy cocktail party.

Neighborhood Party:

Many times this type of party calls for a cut above mom-wear and more casual than your dressy work attire. Neighborhood parties are often held in the late afternoon through early evening. Think casual Friday work attire and you’ll be good to go.

Dress, J. McLaughlin, $195. Layer the red gingham shirt (Banana Republic $64.50) over the dress and button. Add the Ann Mashburn cashmere cardigan ($295). Add black tights if it is cold. These boots are great, as they are casual, comfortable and waterproof! Cole Haan $428. Bracelets are both J. Crew, $65. Elaine Turner handbag, $225. Earrings are Temple St. Clair at AshBlue, $2100.

After Work Party:

This is not the time to wear anything low cut or too short. And, remember, only two cocktails–that way you can giggle at others but not have anyone giggle about YOU. This outfit will take you from work to party.

Dress, J. McLaughlin $195. Blue and black are big this year, and this Burberry cardigan, $395, is a great way to wear this trend. OR, opt for the Bernardo metallic leather jacket (Nordstrom, $298) to add a little tailored spunk to your outfit. Black semi-sheer tights (yes, they don’t have to be opaque anymore) would be great here. These Kate Spade Fondue shoes are perfect for day to evening (on sale for $262.99 on Zappos). The Kayce Hughes faux pearl necklace, $35, and Kayce Hughes vintage rhinestone bracelet, $244, work well with both outfits, as does the Elaine Turner handbag, $225. Ahhh, those gorgeous Temple St. Clair earrings, $2100.

Dressy Cocktail Party

While the sparkly jacket kinda scares us at StyleBlueprint (as we’ve seen it done wrong so many times) it really is great here, especially for New Years. Imagine wearing it, and all the accessories featured here, with a pair of jeans and a black tee for completely new look. If you can’t do the jacket with the black dress, no worries, the outfit is terrific with or without it. Michael Kors blazer, $198 www.jmclaughlin.com dress: $195. Elaine Turner handbag, $225. Judith Bright necklace, $398. Henri Bendel bracelet, $248. Nine West black shoes (2.5 inch heel), $69. Kate Spade gold/blackshoes (4 inch heel), $398. Temple St. Clair earrings, $2100.

See, one dress, one pair of earrings and one handbag can go a very long way this holiday season!
