My fat is a lot like my personality. Stubborn. Especially my belly fat. I eat a fairly clean diet and exercise regularly, but the belly bulge has always refused to be banished. So when I had the chance to be part of a local study at Dermatology & Laser of Alabama using the latest and greatest fat blasting technique, Vanquish, I jumped in, belly first!
What is it?
Vanquish is the newest body sculpting treatment on the market and claims to achieve the closest results to surgical alternatives, all while being noninvasive (completely contact free!) and totally painless.
How it works:
Vanquish is the first body contouring treatment that incorporates a “focused-field radio frequency” to destroy fat. The device never even comes in contact with your body. It zaps the fat by heating the skin to 101 degrees and the underlying fat to an even greater temp which results in fat melting. The fat cell is completely destroyed and eliminated naturally over the next few weeks. Most doctors are recommending 4 to 6 treatments of 30 minutes each spaced a week apart to see a loss of 2 to 3 inches off the waistline. (I actually lost an inch off my waist a week after my first treatment!)
The device has a large surface area with adjustable sides so I was able to treat my belly as well as my love handles. This is a huge advantage over other devices out there – each area requires a separate treatment session with devices like Cool Sculpting.
What to expect:
Michelle Alvis is the Vanquish guru at Dermatology & Laser of Alabama. She walked me through the entire process and was very knowledgeable. I was told to drink plenty of water before my first visit, as being well hydrated aids the fat melting process. When I arrived at my first appointment I was given a not-so-flattering pair of paper shorts to wear, plus a flexible swatch that reminded me of an air conditioning filter and a Vanquish travel bag so I could bring these items with me to all future appointments. Before getting started I was asked to remove all metal, as in no jewelry or even an underwire bra. Then I was weighed, measured and photographed. The treatment room was pretty typical looking and I laid on a blanketed bed wearing my paper shorts and a tank top. Michelle adjusted the device over my designated treatment area and placed the air conditioner filter-like thingie on top of my stomach area and fired up the machine. I lay there for 30 minutes and felt nothing more than a warm sensation, not unlike what you might experience using a heating pad. Occasionally I felt a slight “hot spot” which dissipated when Michelle made adjustments.
I was out of there in less than an hour and felt no discomfort or anything. I was told to massage the area gently, drink plenty of fluids and even exercise a bit to encourage the lymphatic drainage (aka excretion of fat).
I went for a total of 6 30-minute sessions and have lost 4 inches as of two weeks after my final treatment. The studies indicate that results can continue to be seen several months after the final treatment so I am still a ways out on final measurements.
Like all beauty fixes, you get what you pay for, and those treatments that work the best typically cost more. Package deals run around $3000 for 4 treatments.
All in all, I have to give this a resounding thumbs up: it works, it’s not time intensive, there was no pain or discomfort for me, whatsoever, and it costs less overall than other procedures.
