Summer is officially here and that means warm weather, chillin’ by the pool and skimpy clothes! However, just because your clothes are skimpy doesn’t mean they can’t be fashionable and super cool. We’re flipping out over some of the tightest upcoming events this June by giving you some great ideas to dress the part. We kick off this fashionable party with a dude who set trends wherever he went: David Bowie; next up is a chance to get out of your car and enjoy Atlanta by any human-powered machine you have laying around (including your own feet) at Atlanta Streets Alive; and finish up June with an ice cold brewskie at Atlanta Summer Beer Fest!
- Friday, June 3, 2016, at 8 p.m.
- Tickets are available at varying costs, depending on selected seating.
- Hear hits like “Under Pressure,” “Heroes,” “Changes” and more.
David Bowie was a gifted musician, iconic performer, style legend and an artist who understood the power of reinvention and pure, unadulterated creativity. There is no denying that he crossed music genres with his mind-blowing sounds, lyrics and collaborations, and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra honors his memory, and his astounding breadth of work, with this special, one-night-only performance. Led by conductor Brent Havens, vocalist Tony Vincent and a full rock band, the ASO pays tribute to the musical legacy that is David Bowie.
What to wear: If there was any powerhouse that could truly connect fashion with music it was Ziggy Stardust himself. We wanted to honor David Bowie’s unique take on style, while still being mindful of the ASO setting, by visiting River Mint Finery in Buckhead. River Mint Finery offers cool threads with a minimalistic edge, which pair nicely with the Avindy jewelry line, created and designed by one of the store owners. The overall sleek, yet feminine, look is a cool way to show off your Bowie pride.
The Event: Atlanta Streets Alive
- Sunday, June 12, 2016, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
- The family-friendly route stretches 2.7 miles on Peachtree Road, from Edgewood to 17th Street
- No motorized traffic allowed
If you need a break from the utter living hell that is Atlanta’s traffic (and face it, we all do), make sure you attend Atlanta Streets Alive, a celebration of all-things nonmotorized. Travel the route by bike, skateboard, foot or stroller, and embrace the lack of car horns, exhaust fumes and road rage at this sweet block party. The free event is a chance to get to know our intown neighborhoods in a new way, where participants can get up close and personal with residents and business owners and see the real lifeblood of this city.
What to wear: We had to be sure and hit up a local boutique that we loved since everyone will be checking out your ensemble (and you can’t slink down and hide in your car). Sage is an absolute gem located in the wonderful Avalon shopping complex in Alpharetta. Sage boutique has super cute looks that won’t break the bank and are hitting the new and cool trends coming our way. Because Atlanta Streets Alive is a human-powered event, we wanted to keep things real, therefore only featured flat shoes and sandals that were both cute and comfy, in case you wanted to pull out the ol’ two-wheeler or skateboard.
The Event: Atlanta Summer Beer Fest
- Saturday, June 18, 2016
- 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.
- Takes place at Historic Fourth Ward Park
- Tickets are $40 in advance, $45 after June 9, and $55 day of event.
- 21 and older
A hot, June day spent under Atlanta’s baking sun calls for one thing: beer. Lots of beer (and probably sunscreen). The Atlanta Summer Beer Fest is moving locations this year, to the wonderful neighborhood of Old Fourth Ward, and will entice ticketholders with over 200 beers, both brewed locally and from across the country. Wash down all that beer with great food and fill up on entertainment with live music from Ocean Street.
What to wear: Day drinking requires an outfit that will not only look cute, but stand up to spilled drinks and drunken passers-by. Thank goodness for Sorelle Boutique! Located in the wonderfully charming Morningside neighborhood, Sorelle has a great variety of trendy and classic pieces perfect for a day of drinking or any cool Atlanta event. Disclaimer: Since we figured a beer fest may get a bit slippery and requires a lot of walking to sample every participating brewery, we went with shoes that were stylish AND comfy.
As you go shopping for these and other fun happenings in Atlanta, make sure to tell these local boutiques that StyleBlueprint sent you! And in order to finish this fashion-related story off right and pay homage to one of the world’s most influential, talented trendsetters mentioned above, here’s a reminder of why David Bowie was an icon in the stylish world of music.
